It began with building primitive forts in the woods behind my childhood home in western NY. That home was built on land that has been in my family for generations using the salvaged 2x4's and the original foundation of an old camp. Through love and labor my parents transformed that camp into a home for their growing family that was always filled with life, the smell of food cooking, and the sounds of children running around.
When I moved to Vermont in the 90’s, I found a rich, abundant local community that reminded me of my home, one that was grounded in the land and supportive of many ways of living. I was drawn to engage with this place initially through food, celebrating the local farmers, foragers, and cheese makers. Eventually I found my way into another craft tradition, one that runs deep though the mountains and valleys of New England: woodworking and furniture making.
In 2013, I founded RIVEN, a furniture design studio in the vibrant South End of Burlington, Vermont. We specialize in creating modern, minimalist furniture inspired by the craft traditions of New England, and the clear, honest practicality of Scandinavian and Japanese design. Whether it is bespoke furniture for select private and commercial clients, or one of our signature designs, each piece is crafted by hand from the highest grade domestic hardwoods, and finished with ultra-low VOC finishes. If you are interested in commissioning a piece for your home or business, please get in touch.
