Born from the inquiry of destruction, this sidetable is part of a series exploring the effects of a classic Japanese technique for treating wood: Shou Sugi Ban. Literally translated as "charred cedar board" it was originally used to preserve wood for exterior use. In the Smoke series, we employ it as a means to add texture and visual dynamics to our designs. The pattern of charring can be subtle and smooth, or deeply furrowed; we aim for the space in between. For this design we subjected the drawer fronts to a series of burns to add a deep black tone and charred texture to the string grained Ash wood. The surrounding case and base are Ash to which a pickling solution has been applied, lightening the wood, and adding a marked contrast to the drawers. A brushed Nickle pull, cork lining in the drawers, and soft close mechanism lend the piece a finished elegance and functional purity.
