FAQs

What is the turn around time for a custom piece?

It varies depending on the number of projects we have in the queue at any given time. Generally 2-3 months, but sometimes longer. The largest part of any custom piece is the design process leading up to the actual crafting of the piece. We prefer not to rush this phase, and find that more time spent on this results in a more considered and fully realized final design.

What is the design process like for a custom piece?

We like to begin by simply having a conversation about your vision, inspirations, ideas, and, most importantly, the way the piece will integrate into your life and home environment. We then begin gathering inspiration and ideas before beginning the sketching process. Once we have a solid idea of the direction of the design, the final stages unfold quickly: we create multiple rounds of finish samples, and gather the materials needed to start crafting your new piece of furniture.

I have an idea for a product that incorporates wood. Where should I start?

We’d love to chat! We specialize in helping you more deeply understand the structural, aesthetic, and emotional qualities that wood brings to a product. Whether it’s carved Walnut handle, or a bent-plywood structural element, we have the expertise to help you incorporate wood into your project in an intentional and integral way. You can come to us with as little as a napkin sketch and we will help you move your design forward.

We also work with a network of professionals to help folks like you bring their vision to life. We will you connect to someone to help with each phase of your product design journey: from 3D modelling and industrial engineering, to sourcing materials, finishing, and packaging.

What about delivery or shipping?

Regardless of where you are, we are able to get your piece to you. We are able to deliver larger pieces within about four hours of our studio in Burlington, VT. For longer hauls we will arrange a white glove delivery service to your home.

For smaller items like boards and Pan Doodles, we ship via the standard carriers, usually within a week.

Can I come visit the studio?

Of course! If you have a piece of furniture you’d like to have made, or are interested in our design services, drop us a line and we’ll find a time to meet up show you our space. Generally the studio is a busy workspace, and as such not very conducive to drop ins. However we do occasionally have special events. If you sign up for our emails, we’ll give you the secret password.

How did you begin designing and making furniture?

“I relish in the process of learning by doing and that’s how I got into designing furniture. I started with 2x4’s and a circular saw in my living room, then found my way to a woodworking school, and eventually opened up my own workshop. Over the years I’ve sought out craftspeople and designers I admire to help deepen my understanding of the material and expand my design language. I believe it’s important to recognize good design in any discipline, be it architecture, music, interiors, clothing, or systems. The more we look, the more we learn.”
